The Monochrome Conspiracy brengt werk samen van Marc Angeli, Willy De Sauter, Jus Juchtmans, Sophie Ko, Dirk Vander Eecken, Wout Vercammen, Stefaan Vermuyten en Marthe Wéry. Vanuit zeer verschillende praktijken onderzoeken zij kleur, materie, licht, ruimte en waarneming. Daarbij wordt ook de klassieke vorm van het monochroom, het geschilderde kleurvlak, verruimd. Eén kleur kan zich evengoed manifesteren als materie, object, ruimtelijke vorm of als collage opgebouwd vanuit één enkele kleur.
De titel van de tentoonstelling is ontleend aan een werk van Stefaan Vermuyten. Met The Monochrome Conspiracy stelt hij vragen bij de bijzondere fascinatie en bewondering die het monochroom binnen de kunstwereld geniet. Dit specifieke werk introduceert daarmee een kritische, maar ook ironische stem in de tentoonstelling: waarom kennen we zoveel betekenis toe aan een beeld dat ogenschijnlijk zo weinig prijsgeeft? Waarom heeft het monochroom zo’n bijzondere plaats verworven binnen de kunstgeschiedenis? En wanneer is een werk eigenlijk nog een monochroom?

The Monochrome Conspiracy brings together works by Marc Angeli, Willy De Sauter, Jus Juchtmans, Sophie Ko, Dirk Vander Eecken, Wout Vercammen, Stefaan Vermuyten and Marthe Wéry. Drawing on very different practices, these artists explore colour, matter, light, space and perception. In doing so, they also expand the monochrome beyond its classical form, the painted field of colour. A single colour can just as readily manifest itself as matter, object or spatial form, or as a collage constructed from one colour alone.
The exhibition takes its title from a work by Stefaan Vermuyten. With The Monochrome Conspiracy, he questions the particular fascination and admiration that the monochrome commands within the art world. This specific work introduces a voice that is both critical and ironic into the exhibition: why do we attribute so much meaning to an image that, on the face of it, reveals so little? Why has the monochrome come to occupy such a distinctive place in art history? And at what point does a work cease to be a monochrome?

The Monochrome Conspiracy réunit des œuvres de Marc Angeli, Willy De Sauter, Jus Juchtmans, Sophie Ko, Dirk Vander Eecken, Wout Vercammen, Stefaan Vermuyten et Marthe Wéry. À partir de pratiques très différentes, ces artistes explorent la couleur, la matière, la lumière, l’espace et la perception. Ce faisant, ils dépassent également la forme classique du monochrome — l’aplat de couleur peint. Une seule couleur peut tout aussi bien se manifester sous la forme d’une matière, d’un objet ou d’une forme spatiale, ou encore d’un collage élaboré à partir d’une seule et même couleur.
Le titre de l’exposition est emprunté à une œuvre de Stefaan Vermuyten. Avec The Monochrome Conspiracy, l’artiste interroge la fascination et l’admiration particulières dont le monochrome fait l’objet dans le monde de l’art. Cette œuvre introduit ainsi dans l’exposition une voix à la fois critique et ironique : pourquoi attribuons-nous autant de sens à une image qui, en apparence, dévoile si peu ? Pourquoi le monochrome a-t-il acquis une place aussi singulière dans l’histoire de l’art ? Et à partir de quel moment une œuvre cesse-t-elle d’être un monochrome ?
