Form and colour are the starting points of the Belgian artist Johan De Wit’s (°1960,BE) varied oeuvre, which largely consists of sculptures, videos, and painterly objects.

His works evoke a wide range of associations, such as memories of childhood, but also notions of insignificance and melancholy. In an atmosphere of poetic stillness, the artist combines his love for aesthetic objects with the everyday: from a jar, a table, and a ladder to more abstract objects – sometimes even with religious or archaeological connotations – such as a disc or a triptych.

De Wit draws inspiration from the painting of the Flemish Primitives and the Flemish and Dutch masters of the Golden Age, but clear echoes of the work of Giorgio Morandi, for example, can also be felt. In both the still lifes and landscapes of the old masters, De Wit recognises the restless emptiness, but also the stylisation he seeks in his own work. This is expressed in his search for materiality, textures, and colour. In De Wit’s work, everything seems to be constantly in motion, much like life itself.

For his most recent series of artworks, a paper model forms the basis, which is reinforced with resin and marble powder on both the inside and outside. During the drying process, De Wit manipulates the model to create folds and dents. He then finishes it with paint in various hues, and finally sands the surface down. This results in a process of both concealing and revealing the dents and folds of the three-dimensional form. The light that is captured and reflected emphasises the rich layers of the surface.


Vorm en kleur zijn de uitgangspunten van Johan De Wit (°1960, BE) zijn gevarieerde oeuvre dat grotendeels bestaat uit sculpturen, video’s en schilderachtige objecten. 

Zijn werken roepen allerlei associaties op, zoals herinneringen aan de kindertijd, maar ook nietigheid en melancholie. 

In een sfeer van poëtische verstilling bundelt de kunstenaar zijn liefde voor esthetische 

objecten met het leven van alledag: van een potje, een tafel en een ladder tot abstractere voorwerpen – soms zelfs met religieuze of archeologische connotatie – als een schijf of een drieluik.

 

De Wit laat zich inspireren door de schilderkunst van de Vlaamse Primitieven en de Vlaamse en Hollandse meesters uit de Gouden Eeuw, maar er zijn ook duidelijke echo’s voelbaar van het werk van Giorgio Morandi bijvoorbeeld. In zowel de stillevens als de landschappen van de oude meesters herkent De Wit de rusteloze leegtes maar ook de gestileerdheid die hij in zijn eigen werk opzoekt. Dit uit zich in een zoektocht naar materialiteit, texturen en kleur. Bij De Wit lijkt alles steeds in beweging te zijn, zoals het leven zelf.

 

Voor zijn meest recente reeks objecten vormt een model in papier de basis, dat wordt 

versterkt met hars en marmerpoeder aan de binnen- en buitenkant. Tijdens het uitdrogen manipuleert De Wit het model om vouwen en deuken te laten ontstaan. Vervolgens werkt hij het af met verf in verschillende kleurtinten, om tenslotte het oppervlak terug af te schuren. Dit resulteert in een verbergen en terug tevoorschijn halen van de deuken en de plooien van de driedimensionale vorm. Het licht dat hierin wordt opgevangen en weerkaatst beklemtoont de rijke lagen van het oppervlak.
