Holding and revealing a self-contained secret is not only the common thread which runs through this exhibition which also has the similarly named title ‘Holding a self-contained Secret’, but it is also the common theme that unites these three artists, each of whom embraces a highly personal and unique visual imagery.
Despite the fact that each of them follow their own path, they take monochrome, minimalism, which has been an artistic discipline throughout history, as a starting point, and shape and transform it in their own inimitable style.
In the case of Henk Delabie, the spatial three-dimensionality of his monochrome sculptures is without doubt impressive, even when mounted on a wall, thereby taking
on the aura of a painting. The tension between open and closed is a constant presence in his Units. The artist strikes a subtle balance between showing and hiding, between accessibility and eternally concealed, between smoothly polished and roughly finished material.
Henk Delabie constantly juggles with what we do and don’t see, how the interior remains untouchable and inaccessible, no matter how we twist or turn it. In other words, how a form can inherently remain a form no less, without ever revealing its secret and where the art of painting and sculpture form a symbiosis without the pretence of being explicit.
Het bevatten en onthullen van een in zichzelf besloten geheim is niet alleen de rode draad in deze tentoonstelling met de gelijknamige titel ‘Holding a self-contained secret’,
maar het is ook het gemeenschappelijke thema dat deze drie kunstenaars, die elk op zich een persoonlijke en onnavolgbare beeldtaal hanteren, bindt.
Hoewel ze elk het monochrome, het minimalisme als kunstdiscipline doorheen de geschiedenis als uitgangspunt nemen, op hun eigen manier vormen en vervormen, bewandelen ze elk een eigen parcours.
Bij Henk Delabie treft de ruimte en de ruimtelijkheid van en in zijn monochrome sculpturen – ook al worden die aan de wand bevestigd waardoor ze het aura van een schilderij krijgen toegedicht. Het spanningsveld tussen open en gesloten is een constante in zijn Units. Tussen tonen en verbergen, tussen toegankelijkheid en voor eeuwig gesloten, tussen egaal gepolijst en ruw materiaal bewandelt deze kunstenaar een subtiel evenwicht.
Voortdurend speelt Henk Delabie met datgene wat we zien en niet zien, hoe de binnenkant onaanraakbaar en ontoegankelijk blijft, hoe we het ook draaien of keren. Of, hoe een vorm an sich een vorm kan blijven zonder ooit zijn geheim prijs te geven en waarin schilderkunst en beeldhouwkunst een symbiose vormen zonder nadrukkelijk te willen zijn.
