Johan De Wit’s creations often refer to classics from art history from Antiquity to the present. His work evokes traditional themes such as landscapes, still lifes and genre pieces. In addition, they also play on the conventional philosophic and religious themes: the insignificance and fragility of human existence, the ephemeral, futile and ludicrous of power and flamboyance, the pleasure and fleetingness of earthly pleasures.
The artworks are made in paper, reinforced with resins and enriched with iron powders and pigments. The artist’s technical mastery is astounding, is subservient, but does not want to overwhelm us. Most of the works seem to refer to something in reality and at the same time they don’t, which confuses the viewer. There is melancholy and heaviness in the air, but also humor, comfort and care. De Wit leaves thinking open and exposes feeling. His work is gripping.
De creaties van Johan De Wit verwijzen vaak naar klassiekers uit de kunstgeschiedenis van de Oudheid tot heden. Zijn werk roept traditionele thema's op zoals landschappen, stillevens en genrestukken. Daarnaast spelen ze ook met conventionele filosofische en religieuze thema's: de nietigheid en kwetsbaarheid van het menselijk bestaan, het vluchtige, futiele en potsierlijke van macht en flamboyantie, het plezier en de vluchtigheid van aardse genoegens.
De kunstwerken zijn uitgevoerd in papier, versterkt met harsen en verrijkt met ijzerpoeders en pigmenten. De technische beheersing van de kunstenaar is verbluffend, is dienstbaar, maar wil ons niet overweldigen. De meeste werken lijken te verwijzen naar iets in de werkelijkheid en tegelijkertijd ook weer niet, wat de kijker in verwarring brengt. Er hangt melancholie en zwaarte in de lucht, maar ook humor, troost en zorgzaamheid. De Wit laat het denken open en legt het gevoel bloot. Zijn werk is aangrijpend.
