Dirk Vander Eecken’s background emanates from his visual art experiences in the use of graphic perspectives, existing icons, images and maps. The switch to painting originated from lines he observed in the landscape which he then transformed into grids and patterns leading progressively to ever more abstract canvases.
His fascination with electron microscopy and nanotechnology also underpinned the shift towards layered paintings using thin layers of aerosol paint. In this way he creates carefully composed images that emerge from the structural chaos of science, from floral motifs inspired by the playful frivolity of the Rococo era, from the light that is captured almost monochromatically in the colourful edges of each canvas. In specks of gold and small scratches or smudges of colour a sense of freedom glows. In each canvas, the frame is merely a point of reference where an imaginary world emerges as through a window, as a thought, as a mirror.
His work oscillates between the organic and the frivolous, between speckles and pixels, between indirect movement and a poetic-like clarity. Each linen rectangle embraces a subtle radiance, a numinous experience that can be both intimate and surprising whether viewed from up-close or equally from far.
Dirk Vander Eecken (BE) startte zijn ervaringen binnen de beeldende kunst met grafische invalshoeken, bestaande iconen, beelden en kaarten die hij als achtergrond gebruikte. De omslag naar schilderkunst vertrok vanuit lijnen in het landschap die hij omboog naar rasters en patronen die almaar abstractere doeken opleverden.
Zijn fascinatie voor elektronenmicroscopie en nanotechnologie ondersteunt daarenboven de weg naar gelaagde schilderijen van dunne lagen gespoten verf. Hij creëert gecontroleerde beelden die voortkomen uit de gestructureerde chaos van de wetenschap, uit florale motieven geïnspireerd op de speelse lichtheid van de rococo-tijd, uit het licht dat bijna monochroom opgevangen wordt in de kleurrijke randjes van elk doek. In puntjes van goud en kleine krasjes of vlekjes van kleur schittert een zekere vrijheid. In elk doek wordt het kader slechts houvast en verschijnt een verbeelde wereld als een raam, als een gedachte, als een spiegel.
Zijn werk vibreert tussen het organische en het frivole, tussen spikkels en pixels, tussen de onrechtstreekse beweging en een poëtisch ogende leesbaarheid. Elke linnen rechthoek omspant een zachte gloed, een numineuze ervaring die van dichtbij en veraf tegelijk intiem en verrassend kan zijn.
