JOHAN PARMENTIER

‘Time is a challenging factor in the creative process’, writes Johan Parmentier. ‘You have to try to make it your friend by waiting for the right moment to arrive.’ His works transform solid stone into basic, rudimentary sculptures, as we can already see at the entrance and along the path leading to the pavilion. 

He allows the blocks of stone to speak their own language, characteristic of morphology and matter: they become rhythmic structures, with a certain monumentality and physicality. He treats the surface of the stone, as it were, in such a way that a sensual force rises to the surface and reminds us of archaic statues, monoliths from a distant past.

‘Tijd is een hard gegeven in het creatieproces’, schrijft Johan Parmentier bijvoorbeeld ‘Je moet hem proberen tot vriend te maken door te wachten tot het juiste moment is aangebroken.’ Hij bewerkt massieve steenblokken tot basale rudimentaire sculpturen, zoals we al kunnen zien aan de ingang en langs het pad richting het paviljoen hier. 

Hij laat de steenbrokken een eigen taal spreken, eigen aan de morfologie en de materie: het worden ritmische structuren, met een zekere monumentaliteit en lichamelijkheid. Hij bewerkt als het ware de huid van de steen op zo’n manier dat een sensuele kracht aan de oppervlakte komt en doet denken aan archaïsche beelden, monolieten uit een ver verleden.
