ARPAÏS DU BOIS: donner la parole à la brise

Paint with words, write with the stroke or paint! If we must indeed focus intently on what Arpaïs Du Bois inscribes on her works, we must devote the same attention to the images, see how they appear as pure spaces of colour in which forms and materials oppose each other. And it is another story that is summoned here. Not that of the simplistic opposition between figuration and abstraction, but the questioning of the relationships between the space of the image and the space of the painting. We know that this artist makes no secret of the techniques used: a sheet of paper then a layer of acrylic sometimes mixed with walnut stain, sometimes with ink. On top of this base, she applies charcoal, acrylic, crayon or pastels, and even inks, during sessions that demand all her energy and concentration. It entails an accumulation, erasure. It's also about the order of the cry and stuttering. 

Schilderen met woorden. Schrijven met lijnen of verf! Hoewel je bijzonder aandachtig moet zijn voor wat Arpaïs Du Bois op haar werken schrijft, mag je zeker ook de beelden niet vergeten. Deze kondigen zich namelijk aan als een zuivere ruimte van kleuren waarin vormen en materialen tegenover elkaar staan. En daar wordt een ander verhaal verteld. Geen verhaal over de simplistische tegenstelling tussen figuratie en abstractie, maar wel het vraagstuk over het verband tussen de ruimte van het beeld en de ruimte van het schilderij. De kunstenares maakt geen geheim van de technieken die ze gebruikt. De basis bestaat uit een vel papier met een laagje acrylverf, soms vermengd met bister, soms met inkt. Daarop brengt ze houtskool, acrylverf, waskrijt, pastels of inkt aan, tijdens sessies die al haar energie en concentratie vereisen. Het gaat hier om opeenstapelen en vervagen. Zoals schreeuwen en stotteren.

Met Arpaïs Du Bois, Carll Cneut en Christophe Vekeman. De Duitse fotograaf Michael Wolf bekeek de wereld vanuit de drukke metropool Hong Kong. Vijf jaar na zijn dood brengt een nieuwe publicatie zijn fotoreeksen in dialoog met de intieme tekeningen van Arpaïs Du Bois. Carll Cneut nam samen met schrijfster Imme Dros het bekende verhaal van Pinocchio onder handen. Christophe Vekeman brengt een klassieker mee: Rood paleis van Ferdinand Bordewijk.
