With Silenzi d’oro, Hilde Vandaele Gallery presents the second solo exhibition in Watou by the Italian artist Mirco Marchelli.
Since the mid-1990s, Marchelli has developed a highly distinctive visual language in which painting, assemblage and sculpture converge. Materials such as plaster, cement, wax, textiles, rubber, fragments of brick and found objects are brought together in contemplative compositions. By removing these elements from their original context and placing them within new relationships, he endows them with renewed meaning. Each work bears the traces of time, use and memory, unfolding as a subtle landscape of associations.
The title Silenzi d’oro refers to a state in which silence is understood not as emptiness or absence, but as an active space of attention and resonance. In these new works, Marchelli deliberately embraces a visual language of reduction and omission. His artistic gesture is akin to music and breathing: what remains unseen is often as significant as what is visibly present. The works invite a slow and attentive mode of looking, allowing nuances of material, colour and rhythm to reveal themselves gradually.
A distinctive aspect of Marchelli’s practice is the titles of his works, which are often poetic, ironic and associative in nature. Through wordplay, contrasts and unexpected linguistic shifts, they create an additional layer of meaning that enriches interpretation without determining it. Like the works themselves, these titles suggest rather than explain.
Mirco Marchelli (Novi Ligure, 1963) lives and works in Ovada, in the Piedmont region of Italy. Over the past decades, his work has been exhibited extensively throughout Italy and internationally. In 2011, he participated in the 54th Venice Biennale as part of the Italian Pavilion. His oeuvre occupies a unique position at the intersection of visual art, poetry and music, distinguished by a rare sensitivity to material, memory and silence.
With Silenzi d’oro, Marchelli reaffirms his position as an artist capable of transforming the ordinary into images of profound poetic intensity. The exhibition offers a contemplative experience in which matter becomes a vessel for memory and silence acquires a tangible presence.

Met Silenzi d’oro presenteert de Hilde Vandaele Gallery de tweede solotentoonstelling van de Italiaanse kunstenaar Mirco Marchelli in Watou.
Sinds het midden van de jaren 1990 ontwikkelt Marchelli een zeer eigen beeldtaal waarin schilderkunst, assemblage en sculptuur samenvloeien. Materialen zoals gips, cement, was, textiel, rubber, baksteenfragmenten en gevonden voorwerpen worden door hem samengebracht tot verstilde composities. Door deze elementen los te maken uit hun oorspronkelijke context en in een nieuwe samenhang te plaatsen, geeft hij ze een hernieuwde betekenis. Elk werk draagt de sporen van tijd, gebruik en herinnering, en ontvouwt zich als een subtiel landschap van associaties.
De titel Silenzi d’oro verwijst naar een toestand waarin stilte niet wordt opgevat als leegte of afwezigheid, maar als een actieve ruimte van aandacht en resonantie. In deze nieuwe werken kiest Marchelli nadrukkelijk voor een beeldtaal van reductie en weglating. Zijn artistieke gebaar is verwant aan muziek en ademhaling: wat niet wordt getoond, is vaak even betekenisvol als wat zichtbaar aanwezig is. De werken nodigen uit tot een trage en geconcentreerde manier van kijken, waarin nuances van materiaal, kleur en ritme zich geleidelijk onthullen.
Kenmerkend voor Marchelli zijn ook de titels van zijn werken, die vaak poëtisch, ironisch en associatief zijn opgebouwd. Door middel van woordspelingen, tegenstellingen en onverwachte taalverschuivingen creëren zij een extra laag die de interpretatie verrijkt zonder haar vast te leggen. Zoals de beelden zelf suggereren deze titels eerder dan dat zij verklaren.
