Embrace the Change

Because our eyes hold onto visual signals slightly longer than they can actually observe them, our brains sometimes blend a series of images into a single, continuous image. This effect causes separate images to feel like one smooth movement, as if they linger on our retinas while the brain processes the visual information. In the brief moments between these contiguous fragments, there’s a space that shifts between stability and change, order and chaos – like a stream of constant transformation.

The exhibition Embrace the Change flows like an organic, dynamic movement, like a river through a landscape that impacts everything in its path. It explores transition not only as a rhythm or continuity, but also as a reflection of how we relate to nature’s power, the beauty of the unexpected, and the fragile balance of humanity within it. The works of Marc Angeli, Maxime Brigou, and Ewoud Viane each reveal – in their own unique ways – a subtle yet inevitable evolution of forms, ideas, and time.

Created by the weathering of materials or the processing of natural processes, Marc Angeli's works radiate a lived-in layering. Substances such as wine, pollen, glue, pigments, oil, milk or honey turn the monochrome-looking panels into blueprints of life and death. And in his works with alabaster, too, the lines of crystallised plaster or hardened lime are visible as maps of light and relief. The painted surfaces merge with the translucent veins and show nodules and scratches like roads and streams, heights and depths in the landscape. Each work tells its own story of transformation: moments when ideas shift, structures fade, and new possibilities arise.

The traces and fragments of earlier layers of paint or resin in Ewoud Viane’s sculptures and paintings likewise add depth and richness to his work. Inspired by the folds and shadowed gradients of found coloured fabrics or the subtle seasonal shifts seen in historical botanical illustrations, his still lifes emerge as enigmatic constructions. Using soft pastels, poster paint, and cotton rope, he skillfully transforms his source materials into canvases and panels that bring changeability to life – not as a destination, but as an ongoing journey. Viane reminds us that nothing truly stands still, and that beauty lies not only in the new but also in the path travelled.

In Maxime Brigou's artworks, residue is, similarly, an intentional choice, leaving traces that tell the story of the creation process. Using materials like polyester, polystyrene, polyurethane, synthetic plaster, oil paint, acrylic, and spray paint, she constructs sculptures that integrate mirrors, metal, and wood within steel frameworks. By embracing elements like time, space, and natural light, each piece resists a single, fixed form. Every work conveys a sense of having been lived in, evoking transience while appearing to shift with each moment. Like a series of tangible yet still movements, her works reflect every facet of our existence.

Embrace the Change delves into both subtle and monumental perceptions, where visual signals linger just a moment longer, allowing us to experience natural and human processes as fluid movements. This group exhibition at the new and second location of Hilde Vandaele Gallery invites you to explore diverse forms and perspectives on change – sometimes invisible, sometimes profound. Through the works of Marc Angeli, Maxime Brigou, and Ewoud Viane, you’re encouraged to rediscover and appreciate the power of nature that shapes landscapes and the personal transformations that continuously recreate life.
