Michaël de Kok’s paintings have their roots in an imaginary landscape, that is not recognizable in a topographical reality, but is born out of the artist’s imagination. In his mind, memories or impressions of walks are carefully selected and stripped of any form of narrative. What follows are colours that, through his subtle strokes of a supple paintbrush or a flat brush, give rise to absolute brilliance.
His monochrome canvases are made up of multiple transparent layers of oil paint, each displaying different tonalities. Each work, whether it starts from darkness or twilight, reaches for a certain brightness and involves colours that either radiate or assimilate, seeking light or its absence.

De oorsprong van de schilderijen van Michaël de Kok ligt in het imaginaire landschap, dat niet terug te vinden is in een herkenbare topografische werkelijkheid, maar is ontstaan in zijn verbeelding. Herinneringen of impressies aan wandelingen worden in zijn hoofd behoedzaam gefilterd en ontdaan van elke vorm van narrativiteit. Wat volgt, zijn kleuren die door zijn handen via de subtiele streek van een soepel penseel of een platte kwast een totale helderheid genereren.
Zijn monochrome doeken zijn opgebouwd uit verschillende transparante lagen olieverf die telkens andere tonaliteiten brengen. Werkend vanuit het duister of de schemering, reikt elk werk naar klaarte en gaat het om kleuren die stralen of absorberen, om het reiken naar licht of net het ontbreken ervan.
