Perry Roberts is active in many different disciplines and in each case he explores the relationship between abstraction, architecture and language.
Three-dimensional text fragments and items of furniture, murals, drawings and canvasses provide him with a visual component to create fleeting phenomena or thoughts.
In this exhibition his recent almost monochrome compositions which seemingly capture the essence of immateriality are brought together. He uses combinations of cotton canvas and/or linen, as well as gesso, acrylic paint and needle and thread to create visual elements. Carefully structured shapes and patterns combine, layer upon layer, to become a tangible object from which eventually every trace of craftsmanship has been removed. The woven structures are stretched and co-joined with each other, constructed as an
architectural grid, as a spatial construction. Each of the works exhibited here has a certain sensitivity within, producing a sensation as though you are subconsciously being encouraged to touch, feel, stroke its surface.
The apparent sobriety inherent in his work reveals a kind of elusiveness, like a surface shimmering with light, an intrinsic sensual experience, with traces of both certainty and doubt. Balancing between a tranquil tangibility and a minimal colour spectrum, these hard-edge compositions are as elusive as they are seductive.
Perry Roberts beweegt in verschillende domeinen en onderzoekt telkens de verhouding tussen het abstracte, het architecturale en de taal. Met driedimensionale tekstfragmenten en meubels, muurschilderingen, tekeningen en doeken, materialiseert hij vluchtige fenomenen of gedachten.
In deze tentoonstelling zijn recente bijna éénkleurige composities bijeengebracht die de essentie van immaterialiteit lijken te raken. Met katoen of linnen, gesso, naald en draad, stelt hij beeldelementen samen, als lijnen of banen die bijna onmerkbaar in elkaar overgaan. Zorgvuldig geordende vlakken en patronen bewegen laag op laag op laag tot een fysiek object waar op den duur ieder spoor van ambachtelijkheid is onttrokken.
De geweven structuren zijn gespannen en verbonden in en met elkaar, opgebouwd als een architecturaal grid, als een ruimtelijke constructie. Elk werk hier draagt een zekere sensitiviteit in zich, alsof je aangetrokken wordt om de huid ervan te raken, te voelen, te aaien.
Zijn ogenschijnlijk sober werk markeert een vorm van ongrijpbaarheid, als een van licht zinderend oppervlak, als een wezenlijke zinnelijke ervaring, met sporen van zekerheid én twijfel. Balancerend tussen een rustige tastbaarheid en een minimaal visueel koloriet, zijn deze hard-edge composities even mysterieus als verleidelijk.
