JULIEN JONAS

The recently graduated and up-and-coming talented young artist, Julien Jonas, has opted to show only paintings in this exhibition. He conjures up a dark universe in order to blatantly discard any form of imagery and by inclination any explicit representation of it. On first impressions we are conscious of a preponderance of black and at the same time confronted with a dissemination of an image. The grey shades in his work create an ambivalent, more ambiguous impression. It is striking that the further away you stand from the painting and the longer you view it, the more you perceive the essence of the painting formulated within. This creates a timeless, evolving sensitivity.

After some time the image materialises and reveals its sophisticated qualities. It is as if Julien Jonas allows us to see in full daylight how one would perceive the same image in the dark. The tangible has become abstract and vice versa. Panel and canvas reveal the agility of Julien Jonas’ brushstrokes and use of colour, yet everything is painted very uniformly and with great sensitivity. While Julien Jonas gives one the impression that there is actually nothing left to paint, he proves eloquently that there are still infinite possibilities within the art of painting.

De net afgestudeerde en jonge beloftevolle kunstenaar Julien Jonas heeft ervoor geopteerd om in deze tentoonstelling enkel schilderijen te tonen. Daarin maakt hij aan de hand van een donker universum komaf met het beeld en met elke directe, nadrukkelijke voorstelling ervan. We zien veel zwart waarbij we uitdrukkelijk met het breken van het beeld worden geconfronteerd. De grijswaarden in zijn werk zorgen voor een ambivalent, meer ambigu gevoel.

Opmerkelijk is dat hoe verder je van het schilderij staat en hoe langer je ernaar kijkt, hoe meer je ontwaart in het schilderij an sich. Op die manier ontstaat er een tijdloze, uitdijende gevoeligheid. Het beeld onthult zich en geeft zich gracieus prijs na verloop van tijd. Alsof Julien Jonas ons in vol daglicht laat gewaarworden hoe je een beeld in duisternis ontwaart. Het concrete is abstract geworden en vice versa. Paneel en doek onthullen de behendigheid van Julien Jonas’ toets en verf, hoewel alles zeer egaal maar zeer sensibel geschilderd is. Terwijl Julien Jonas de suggestie wekt dat er eigenlijk niets meer te schilderen is, toont hij dat er nog oneindige mogelijkheden in de schilderkunst besloten liggen.
