Form, composition and colour make up the three fundamental anchor points in the development of each work created by Mario De Brabandere. Each element is given equal attention and loving care during the creation of his sculptural objects and drawings on paper, which have been brought together for this exhibition. In this sense, these three elements are given equal value and are interwoven with each other in a robust and congenial way. These are the three basic elements that make up both the starting point of his oeuvre as well as a heart-warming invitation to view each work and to explore further what the connecting elements between them are.
A certain rhythm prevails in this exhibition with a balance between the large and small formats, the eye-catchers and the surprises. ‘Verkwikking aan de zielen’ (‘Solace of the souls’) is a serious venture, a coherent entity in which a distinct world unfolds, like separate words and a poem. There is rhythm on the tables and on the walls: oil paint and pencil combined, old or weathered paper and small cardboard tubes, metal wires or a wooden stick.
All these treasures, gems and raw materials are prompts that the artist uses to create accents, underpinned by a solid craftsmanship and evoking the idea of transformation. Each object found gets a new life, dances its way between the three elements – form, composition and colour – to which the artist gives equal respect. Over and over again… until it comes together. Until the puzzle is solved.
And over the years, as one work leads to another, everything becomes intertwined and reappears in a different form or different constellation. The dates of the numbered drawings, the hanging collages and the compositions disappear into a time in which time is no longer a factor. A time without titles, an intuitive interplay of materials, as carriers of thoughts, forms and colours.
Each work that has been spontaneously created is a goal in itself, a balancing act, geometric, abstract or three-dimensional. A world that impresses and touches..
